   When you go to buy yarn for a new project, there are some things you should pay attention to. First things we notice are colour and texture of the yarn. But besides these, there are a couple of things to be taken into account: the thickness and yarn type.

   The thickness of the yarn will be in accordance with the needles size to use. It will affect both the finish of the garment and the time needed to knit it. If you can’t see the yarn in person, or have a reference, or just you still don’t have experience to calculate by eye, you can have a look at manufacturer instructions. You can find two options:

Lanas, lanas, lanas

   Partiendo de que en España llamamos lana a todos los diferentes tipos de fibras que hay para tejer, vamos a ver a grandes rasgos qué diferencias hay entre unas y otras. Para no liarnos, utilizaré la palabra fibra o hilo (en inglés tienen la palabra yarn).

   Cuando vas a comprar hilo para un trabajo, hay que fijarse en varias cosas. Lo primero que nos suele atraer es el color y la textura de la fibra. Pero además de eso hay un par de cosas que tenemos que tener en cuenta: el grosor y el tipo de fibra.

   I like when you can make designs with the yarn. Sometimes you can get it with the stitches, with lace o with the different textures you get combining stitches. But when you want different colours, you need to use, well, different colours. Intarsia, jacquard and fair isle techniques (I will make a post explaining the difference) are ok, but they have a right and a wrong side. It doesn't matter when the wrong side is not going to be visible. But, what happens if you want a scarf?

   Me gusta cuando puedes hacer dibujos con la lana. A veces puedes conseguirlo con el punto, con los calados o las texturas que se consiguen con la combinación de puntos. Pero cuando quieres tener varios colores, tienes que utilizar eso, varios colores. Las técnicas de intarsia, jacquard y fair isle (ya os haré una entrada explicando la diferencia) quedan muy bien, pero sólo en el lado del derecho. No importa demasiado cuando el lado del revés es eso, un lado del revés y no se va a ver. pero ¿qué ocurre si quieres una bufanda por ejemplo?

    Luckily, I have many friends and acquaintances not native Spanish speakers, or even not at all Spanish speakers. So, for all of them, and for all the people finding this blog for the first time, I will translate, as far as I can, the posts to English.

So here I begin.

    After a long time dealing with the idea of writing a blog, this time is the time and here I am.  A blog to tell things about all that I’m interested in. A blog to share discoveries and concerns.

Presentación - Un viejo nuevo proyecto

   Después de mucho tiempo dándole vueltas a la idea de abrir un blog, esta vez me he decidido y aquí estoy. Un blog para contar cosas de todo eso que me interesa. Un blog para compartir hallazgos e inquietudes.

   Un blog donde poder dar salida a esta afición según unos, vicio según otros, que es crear cosas. Y es que llega un momento en que no necesitas más bufandas, gorros o guantes, ni ese chal precioso que has visto en la revista.... pero no puedes evitar querer hacerlo. Es un reto. Conseguir hacer realidad todo eso que te bulle en la cabeza, ver si es posible plasmar con lana los dibujos que tan bonitos son en tu imaginación...
