I like when you can make designs with the yarn. Sometimes you can get it
with the stitches, with lace o with the different textures you get combining
stitches. But when you want different colours, you need to use, well, different colours. Intarsia, jacquard and fair isle techniques (I will make a post explaining
the difference) are ok, but they have a right and a wrong side. It doesn't
matter when the wrong side is not going to be visible. But, what happens if you
want a scarf?
Recently I discovered double knitting, and I loved it. It
allows you to make designs with two colours, with two right sides, like positive
and negative. The result is double, but it's perfect for a warm garment. It's
knitted all at the same time and both sides are linked. This allows you to have
two-in-one garments, depending on your mood you can wear one side or the other.
So I set myself
to learn this technique. As usual, I began by the final part. As the more
attractive part is making the designs, that was the first thing I attempted.
But once the main goal was achieved, I began to pay attention to details. The
way of casting on and binding off and the side stitches made the edges to have
mixed colours. It’s not bad, but I was not pleased. There must be a way of
having a neat finish and each colour at each side. And nowadays you just have
to search. So I found the way.
And once
everything is under control, I will show you some photos of what can be achieved
with this technique. First, the scarf which make me be interested and which I
will one day knit…
