10 baby blanket

Lately I am not showing you what I am knitting, but it is because it is a surprise and I don't want it to be seen by a particular person... The internet reaches the most unsuspected people...although this time they wouldn't be unsuspected, ha-ha.

When the first woman of our friends group got pregnant, we decided to crochet a blanket for the new group component. We thought a granny square blanket would be a great idea, because we all can participate and it would be made by pieces from all of us. Finally only the women made it, it's a pity the men didn't participate. Different people crocheting the different pieces of a final blanket has its disadvantages, because each person crochet with a different tension. Although we all used the same yarn and hook size, the final pieces were not of exactly the same size. In this case it is very important to block the pieces, thing that we ignored... In the end we not only crocheted the blanket, but we also made some security blankets, a rattle, some baby shoes, a mobile... a complete layette for the baby.

Now we have another pregnant friends. So we are crocheting another baby blanket for their baby. I am not going to show you by the moment, I will show you the final result. But just in case you need some ideas for a baby blanket if you decide to knit or crochet one for any of your friends or family waiting a baby, I am going to show you some.

You can knit a simple blanket. I made this one using garter stitch. I used different colours in rows to brighten it up and finished it with a crochet ending.

You can also knit a blanket with a reversible stitch you like, like seed stitch or checkerboard stitch, which you already know how to knit. This one has been made using checkerboard stitch and the endings in garter stitch.

Silvia knitted this one.

If you want to make the blanket between several people, the best choice is to make it from crochet pieces. You can make it with the typical granny squares, like this one we made for our friends. We began it before knowing if the baby was going to be a boy or a girl, so we chose neutral colours. When we joined the squares we already knew that she was going to be a girl, so we used dark pink to join the squares. As she was going to be born in winter, we put a polar fleece on the reverse side for it to be very warm. This is the most typical granny square, you can find the pattern in many places, like here.

When I had my baby, they chose a triangular granny square. I think it gave them some little problems to join, but the result was nice. I show you the complete layette they crocheted and knitted (and bought) for the baby, for you to see the wonderful things you can create for babies. If you like anything you see here, tell me and I will make an entry with a tutorial. The pattern for the triangular granny square for the blanket can be found here. It is in Spanish, but the diagram has no language and the video can be easily followed. I have not been able to find this model pattern in English.

You can make other different designs from the basic granny square, like this one that is not centered in the centre, like this one. The result is that pleasing.

Crocheted by Sue, you can find it here.

You can choose an hexagonal granny square, I really like the one named african flower. You can find the diagram for example here, and result is this nice.

This one was made by Mottylanas.
You can also use not so classical granny squares, like this two colours spiral ones.

And these are just some of the ideas I can give you to knit or crochet a baby blanket. The possibilities are infinite, as the different models of granny squares that we can crochet, and the different combinations we can make with them. We can make them in just one colour, in different colours, in different sizes making a puzzle...

Which one do you like most? Do you think any of these ones is the one we are making for our friend?
