Knitting glamour

Who has said that knitting and crocheting is grandma’s work? Of course our grandmothers were expert knitters. Many of them mastered both knitting and crocheting, and some even know embroidery, lace-making, tatting and other skills that made them obtain true artworks with limited resources.

All those skills seem to have been forgotten during a generation, even if this forget has not been deliberate. Probably the woman massive incorporation to job market is to be blamed for it. There is no free time for knitting or crocheting when you must work, do the household chores, take care of the kids… It is faster to buy finished things, and mechanization of some techniques made clothes have reasonable prices. Because although this is changing, knitting, crocheting and sewing have been feminine fields.

However, not only our grandmothers knitted. There are tons of photographs of Hollywood gold age stars knitting in the filming breaks. When you have to spend a lot of hours at the studio, dead times while other people is working (changing the set, scenes where you don’t appear, etc) may be endless. A crochet or knitting work can be transported in a small bag, and you don’t need any more than a comfortable chair to do it. If the task is not very complicated, we can talk while working, or go over the dialogues of our next scene. And if what we want is calm, we can ask for no disturbing… in order not to get it wrong. And of course, knitting during the shooting between takes, they all have a glamourous appearance in the photographs.

How many of them do you know? Here we can find Rita Hayworth, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Doris Day, Bette Davis, Katherine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Vivian Leigh, Susan Hayward, Angela Lansbury, and even Alfred Hitchcock is giving a hand.

Nowadays we can also find some stars that like knitting.

Catherine Z Jones, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Katherine Heigl knitting.

Although, let’s accept it, some of these photographs seem to have been taken on purpose, don’t you think? Call me weird, but I don’t usually knit like Sarah in this photo… maybe I should try it…

Sarah Jessica Parker, Paul Rudd, Russell Crow, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
What is obvious is that nobody is away from the influence of knitting, we can find fiction characters or even superheroines addicted to knitting.

And what about you? Do you put yourself confortable for knitting or do you have the glamour of the stars?
